fabio

The ETHOS Lab is proud to present Assistant Professor Fabio Giglietto from the University of Urbino. This is the first event in the publicETHOS event series which seeks to bring top research connected with the lab to a public forum.

On the 15th of April ETHOS Lab will be hosting Fabio who will give a lecture about his work and the possibilities of using online data for research, followed by an in-depth workshop on how to analyze and use Twitter in research. Students, researchers and interested parties are all invited to attend. Read about the lecture and the workshop below, and sign up for the workshop using the form at the bottom of the page. The workshop builds on the lecture, but it is not a requirement to attend both.

Lecture:Ā ā€œOnline Data: Limits and Possibilitiesā€

For the first time in the history, society is able to self-observe itself with a breadth and depth that was simply unimaginable before. The traces left by our devices and the contents intentionally or unintentionally shared by internet users, are now widely used by scholars from different disciplines to formulate and answer a multitude of original research questions. But with great power comes great responsibilities (and also new challenges). Drawing on multiple experiences on the API from most popular platforms as well as from the results of the most recent literature, the lecture will address the possibility, challenges and limits of studies based on online data.

Time: April 15 2015, 10:00-11:00
Place:Ā Aud. 2

Workshop:Ā ā€œHands on Twitter Social Televisionā€

While both the audience second screen practice and the scholarly interest on the topic is rapidly growing, the methodologies employed are far from being standardized thus making comparison between different studies hard if not impossible. The aim of the workshop is to presents a framework to retrieve and analyse data from the Twitter platform with a specific reference to conversations sparkled by TV programs. During the workshop, participants will use R scripts to learn transform TCAT data in a time serie of Twitter activity, to use algorithms for breakout and peak detection with the aim of moving from big to deep data and finally how to perform hybrid content analysis of TV scenes and corresponding Twitter conversations.

Time: April 15 2015, 12:00-16:00
Place: 4A58
