August-September 2018

Kicking of Fall Semester 2018

After a long and warm summer, ETHOS Lab is back, and we welcome all new students and faculty to ITU!

New people join ETHOS Lab as well, namely our Lab Assistant. We are also still recruiting new Junior Researchers (deadline for application Friday 14 September), and we have already welcomed a few, who will be featured in next month's newsletter. Last semester's Junior Researchers are graduating and living #lifeafteritu. They will be publishing blogposts about their research projects on the ETHOS blog Metadata throughout the semester.

In September, we have several events happening, among others a hackathon, a workshop and a datasprint. Read more about these events below.

All the best,

ETHOS Lab

Future of AI and Ethical Guidelines Hackathon

ETHOS Lab and affiliated researchers have collaborated with the Association of Nordic Engineers and Ingeniørforeningen IDA in designing a hackathon, centered around the highly topical issue of artificial Intelligence and ethics. Engineers and experts are invited to voice their opinion and influence the development of the EU artificial intelligence ethical framework, the draft of which will be published by the European Commission at the end of 2018.

The outcome of the event will be a policy document and a set of guidelines reflecting the collective view of Nordic engineers on artificial intelligence and ethics. The particular focus will be on how to change engineering education and engineering processes used today, by starting with the assumption that ethics and responsibility are at the core of any engineering practice.

Research:

#techplomacy datasprint

On the 28 September and 2  October, the Data as Relation research team will be working with ETHOS Lab on a datasprint around the hashtag #techplomacy. As part of Subproject 3 of the Data as Relation project, Locating the Dataverse, led by Postdoc James Maguire, the visualisation and analysis of the #techplomacy hashtag will explore the work that the neologism does in building relations between the Danish state and the Tech industry.

As a digital methods initiative in combination with ethnographic work, the datasprint will produce data visualisations which are empirically informed and critically analysed. The Data as Relation project members will present the resulting analyses to the Danish Embassy in Silicon Valley in December 2018.
