Summer news

Hi there,

I’ve always found it curious how time seems to warp this time of year. The days feel endless and the city comes alive. Just the other night I was walking past Ofelia Plads, across the water from the Opera House. A big group of people were dancing bachata and salsa, switching partners, and greeting strangers. It was one of those sights that are not all that common in Copenhagen. And it was such a breath of fresh air.

May this summer bring you all joyfully out of your comfort zone - to that magic space in between comfort and anxiety, where you return home at the end of the day – proud to have ventured into new territory, inspired by the people you met there, and excited to see where else life might bring you.

What’s new?

Lab TA Edith Terte has defended her Master’s thesis
Our lab TA over the past two years, Edith Terte has defended her thesis alongside her thesis partner Maja Kejser Lousky. It was a raging success and we’re so proud of the work they have done this past semester.

Their thesis explores the potential of applying current AI technologies to assist in the production of embroidery pattern creation. As a part of the thesis’ outcome, a pipeline was developed which simplifies this process, by taking a text prompt as an input and output an embroidery file containing a single-line pattern of an image generated based on the given text prompt. The computerized embroidery machine at ETHOS Lab played a crucial role in quality testing the result generated by their pipeline and Edith and Maja want to express their gratitude to the lab for letting them use the machine and the lab space in general throughout the semester.

Big congrats to both Edith and Maja from the whole ETHOS community!

A farewell note from Edith
Besides finishing my master degree at ITU, I am (sadly) also leaving ETHOS Lab after two educational years. ETHOS Lab is truly a one of a kind community and research organ at the institution, whose activities and initiatives I am very honoured to have taken part in. However, new adventures await me in the near future; from August I will be employed as an assistant professor at the Copenhagen School of Design and Technology (also known as KEA), where I will be teaching programming to students enrolled in the Computer Science program. I am looking very much forward to this opportunity and applying the knowledge gained from my studies and my time with the lab in an educational context.

Thanks for a great time ❤️

ETHOS Lab Summer Party
On Friday June 16 we gathered around the bbq’s in the open greenery behind ITU. It was an afternoon and evening of chatting with new and old friends, students, alumni and colleagues. As always, we like experimenting with materiality, which on this day took the shape of capturing shapes with the help of the sun in a mini cyano print workshop. We thank everyone who stopped by!

What's next?

JR application round will open in September
This is just a quick note to say that we will once again be opening our application round for the ETHOS Lab Junior Researcher programme in September. These days we are posting the final blog posts from the most recent cohort, and they’re a good place to start if you want to learn more.

We will remind you in our next newsletter, but in case you know someone who might be interested (BSc or MSc students at ITU) - tell them to keep their eyes peeled.

Specialise with ETHOS
For the first time ever, we are now inviting ITU Master’s students to do an individual project with the lab. If you are interested in doing an individual project that works explicitly with critical, feminist, decolonial, intersectional AND/OR ethical approaches to data, data visualisation technologies, machine learning, software/platform studies AND/OR projects that aim to develop methodological experimentation and critical technical approaches - this is the call for you!

Projects could include: accessibility, bias in data and IT design, post-colonial computing, gender in STEM, embodied and lived experiences of tech, legislative and regulatory approaches to tech, etc.

While you will remain the primary driver of your project, the lab will support with a general thematic scope, curated reading lists to guide your research, and a vibrant academic community to engage in dialogue with. Your project should ideally be supervised by one of our lab faculty.

Have we piqued your interest? To learn more about this invitation as well as who is available to supervise, reach out to us at ethos@itu.dk.

Visit from Alison Harvey
We are looking forward to welcoming Alison Harvey from York University, Canada in early September to talk about her work in feminist media and games studies. Alison Harvey (she/her) is an Associate Professor of Communications. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from York University. Her research focuses on issues of inclusivity, justice, and accessibility in digital culture, with an emphasis on games, social media platforms, and creative work.

Out of office
During July and August the lab staff will be out of office at different times. This means that this newsletter will take a break over the summer and return in September with lots of exciting updates and things to come.

Can speculative data visualizations help us challenge gender gaps in STEM?

Can speculative data visualizations help us challenge gender gaps in STEM?

By Louie Meyer, Junior Researcher   Can you imagine a future in which no distinction of gender exists? A future where people hive in clusters and are screened as to which working area their skills apply? Can you imagine a future where the current patriarchy is reversed into a matriarchy, characterized by values that are equally as exclusive as those …

Brilliance Bias: Differences in gender perception at ITU

By Chris Aftzidis & Pau Victoria Menshikoff, Junior Researchers   Initial project idea and first attempts Our initial idea was to build a network depicting references in academic papers. We wanted to analyse whether there is a difference in how people of different genders reference each other. But as the direction of our research became clearer to us and we …
